Types of Lube

Using a pre-lubricated condom or applying a small amount of lube inside and outside the condom can help prevent rips and increase pleasure.

There are three main types of lubrication (or lube):

Water-Based Lube
This is the most widely used type of lube and can be used with latex condoms. Water-based lube is smooth and slick but not sticky like silicone or oil. It is absorbed by skin and is easy to clean up with soap and water. Some people can get yeast infections from the glycerin that is added to most water-based lube. Make sure to clean up after using.

Most flavored lube is water-based and contains glycerin. These lubes can be used for oral sex but should not be used for vaginal or anal sex.

Silicone Lube
Silicone lube is more oily and greasy than water based lube–a little goes a long way. It stays slippery until it’s washed with soap and water. Be careful, because too much of this lube can stain clothes or sheets. Many people prefer silicone lube for anal sex and underwater sex because it stays slippery even when wet. But silicone lube should never be used with silicone sex toys–it will damage them.

Oil-Based Lube
Never use oil-based lube with latex condoms because the oil will break the condom. Oil-based lubes include massage oils, lotion, Vaseline, baby oil, Crisco, vegetable oil, and olive oil. Oil-based lubes can irritate the body if used internally and can be messy and hard to clean up. A great alternative is silicone lube.
